Coming uP!

The Brightmoor Alliance believes abundance is achieved through the use of power of which there are three kinds: Personal Power, Collective Action, and Public Policy (see below).

The Brightmoor Come uP!

We are an organization focused on The Come uP! By using all three kinds of power ( or see below). “It’s not easy and it’s not quick. But we have learned to be about it.”

We recognize this abundance to involve more than just money. Abundance involves the whole of people's lives.

Three Kinds of Power

Personal power is the power present in every living human being. This power is like skin color, shoe size, hair color (well maybe not hair color) the world did not give it and the world cannot take it away. It is always present . It is always ours. It may or not be exercised by a person, but we always have it.

Power 1 - Personal Power

Power 2 - Collective Action

Public policy is power exercised by the reach and authority of government and other institutions. It is difficult to invoke and is slow to make change, but it has the broadest reach and its effects are long-lasting.

Power 3 - Public Policy

Collective action is the power possessed by groups of people (block clubs, coalitions, collaboratives, corporations) that combines personal power in various ways to multiply personal power creating greater impact.

A whole framework view must speak to all of us

Brightmoor Alliance is focused on elevating the prosperity of our neighborhood. We recognize prosperity to involve more than just money, but the whole of people's lives.

The Person

Community Development must begin with people. How are the people. What things impact the person, help shape the person. Click here to see our four aspects of the person.

The Money

Brightmoor Alliance is a place where people live who have a variety of incomes. The economic well being of people impacts much if not all of the other aspects of our lives. Click here to see our poverty distribution map. and to links to the Data Driven Detroit partner’s Special Census data portal. Money isn’t everything, but it also
”ain’t nothin”.

The Time and Place

Place: What is “Brightmoor”? It is a place where people are. What are it’s borders? what is in? and what is out? Not as simple as you might think. The Brightmoor Alliance, The Brightmoor Pastors Alliance, and other partners launched a community consultation in 2011-12 to define the borders of Brightmoor. The Map you will see used on this site is the result of that community process.

Time: Brightmoor is different over time. See what the Restore the Moor Community Plan envisioned for the neighborhood in 2013. All this takes place in two dimensions of time, our life time and the time it takes to make something happen. A plan must speak to all stages of life and also how long it will take to happen.
